The IAAF Grand Prix Series began in 1985 and has developed a lot since. Each season a number of disciplines is selected for the Grand Prix Series, which consists of many athletic Grand Prix Meetings all over the world. The outdoor athletic season and the Grand Prix Series is coming to an end with the Grand Prix Final, which is held in different cities each year. In the Grand Prix Final the winners of each discipline and the overall title for men and women are chosen.

1996 Grand Prix Final in Milan, Italy (7th September)

After the disappointment of receiving only a silver medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics Merlene Ottey took a big revenge at the Grand Prix Final in Milan, Italy. She won a clear victory over Olympic champion Gail Devers and set Personal Record. Her 10.74 seconds in the final was record for the Grand Prix Finals and was furthermore a World Veteran Record.
